An Altered State of Consciousness

An Altered State of Consciousness

Gianni Giuliano employs intricate figurative elements to explore the shifting of ambiguous states of consciousness and the unknown. His work involves bringing to life improbable beings/situations and making them coexist according to the laws of probability. Through narrative and image-making, he continually re-examines the boundaries and thresholds of the worlds he creates.

His recent series of paintings uses both an oil/egg emulsion technique, combined with vinyl paint. The works explore the duality that exists between the physical and mental aspects of human existence. The surface is not always indicative of what’s underneath. Painted in a realistic manner, the portraits create an illusion of depth which contrasts with the flatness of the graphic patterns, and question what is real and what is not?

His diptych series consists of twelve graphite drawings, an arrangement of portraits and winterised trees, which he began in 2016. He mentions that they were a turning point in his practice: “It’s where I edged closer to the idea of realism. However, in this series, I further push the limits of academia in combination with a non-conventional hanging arrangement of the work.”  The pieces scrutinise the term “Code Blue”, which is generally used in hospital environments to indicate a patient requiring immediate medical attention, and use it metaphorically in the series to study the human condition. “Code Blue” investigates the duality of interiority versus exteriority.
